Scenario 5 – Pediatric Sulfite Sensitivity

Patient: Child, 8 years old

An 8-year-old patient has a history of wheezing and coughing after consuming foods containing sulfites. The child is now being prescribed a
liquid medication (oral suspension) for 10 days.

Student Tasks:

  • Select sulfites as an allergen in the system.
  • Scan the prescribed liquid medication.
  • Look for sulfites or related terms in the inactive ingredient list.
  • Discuss how you would counsel the caregiver and what alternative might be needed if sulfites are present.
