Scenario 1 – Mystery Rash & Upset Stomach
Patient: Ms. A., 42 years old
Ms. A has been experiencing a red, itchy rash on her arms and torso and intermittent stomach upset for the past 3 weeks. She does not report any known food or medication allergies.
Current daily medications (taken for the last 3 months):
- Medication #1 – once daily oral tablet
- Medication #2 – twice daily oral tablet
- Medication #3 – once daily oral tablet
When you scan each medication in the system, you notice that all three contain a common excipient (for example, milk/lactose).
Student Tasks:
- Scan each medication using the scanner.
- Identify the shared inactive ingredient that could explain her symptoms.
- Explain how you would document this as a suspected allergy or intolerance.
- Suggest what the prescriber or pharmacist should consider changing.
